Strategies of 10 Highly Successful Blacks In Business
By Donna M. Owens
They are moving and shaking the business world as heads of auto dealerships, financial institutions, or service-oriented firms, while racking up millions and billions of dollars in revenue. And if there's one common thread that connects America's top Black businesspeople, it may be this: most gave up a so-called sure thing-like a steady paycheck-to do their own thing as entrepreneurs.
On BET Nightly News, young millionaire Farrah Gray, 20, told Building Black Wealth Correspondent Andre Showell, that to be successful you can't fear rejection, you must seize every opportunity and you must take time to find out what you're good at.
BET.com asked nine other savvy moguls (most leading companies whose sales or billings exceed $100 million or more) to share their strategies for business success.
Russell Wright, CEO - Dimensions International, in Alexandria, VA, a company that specializes in everything from national security to missile systems testing for the U.S. Air Force.
"Part of building Black wealth is having a business or product you can pass on from generation to generation," says Wright, 37. "Many major white-owned companies started this way a long, long time ago. My dad founded this company back in 1985, and I started working here basically as a gopher back in high school and after college. Later, he passed it to me but I'd earned it."

Dimensions International Inc. Named Company Of The Year By Black Enterprise Magazine
Alexandria, VA –
Dimensions International, Inc. (DI), an Alexandria, VA-based technical services company was named the 2005 Company of the Year by Black Enterprise magazine at its 10th Annual Entrepreneurs Awards Gala Dinner on May 21, the culmination of a five-day entrepreneurs' conference in Dallas, Texas.
"We are pleased that Black Enterprise has recognized DI's services and our pursuit of excellence at various levels, which have allowed us to grow in the past 20 years, and especially now, as we are celebrating our 20th anniversary," said Russell T. Wright, DI chairman and CEO. "The company and its employees have done a tremendous job in the areas of IT, logistics, airspace management, and technology integration. This award is not just for the Wright family but for the entire DI family."
Ranked number 35 on Black Enterprise's BE 100s companies, DI bested the competition and cinched the prestigious honor after spearheading the largest deal in the history of its firm, when it acquired SENTEL Corp., under Wright's leadership. By acquiring SENTEL, a former BE 100s company that provides engineering and software services, DI put itself in the enviable position of having greater ability to pursue multimillion-dollar government contracts. BE 100s companies are judged on how fit, fast and inventive they are to not only survive but to thrive. Wright, who assumed the reins of the company from his father Dr. Robert L. Wright, two years ago, managed the company in grossing nearly $100 million in sales last year. Besides SENTEL, DI is also known for the wholly owned subsidiary, Flight Explorer, an Internet-based global tracking system used by the government to track commercial aircraft.
With this award, Russell T. Wright has raised his profile even further, after having been named Entrepreneur of the Year by Black Engineer magazine in February, and Entrepreneur of the Year by the Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council in December 2004.
"However, I am not one to rest on my laurels," Wright explained. "I see this honor as encouragement for us to continue in excellence with the work we have been doing, and that we will continue to do for the next 20-30 years and for generations to come."
